Meal Delivery Part 1 - Hello Fresh

**See the bottom of this review to get $40 off your first box ($20 for 3 meals for 2 people - $6.67 a meal for 2 people)

Hello Fresh We decided to jump on the Meal Delivery Train, try a few of the boxes and give you an honest opinion of our 'journey'.  I am not a part of any company, have not had any contact with any company other than signing up, and did not receive any free items in exchange for my review.

With that said, there are a couple things to mention first on why we tried the meal deliveries. We get busy during this time of year with two kids in soccer so Tuesdays and Thursdays are usually quick, throw food at them as we walk out the door days. Wednesday we have a Bible Study group so it's another quick, early dinner and out the door and Sundays we are at church from 5-8. It was nice to not have to think about dinner those nights as it was already planned out for us, I just had to cook it.

Our first box meal delivery we tried was Hello Fresh.

Hello Fresh offers Easy-to-follow recipes with clear nutritional info, High-quality ingredients sourced straight from the farm, Convenient meal kits that fit perfectly in the fridge, A fun cooking experience that makes you feel unstoppable (per their website). You can customize your menu and get fresh seasonal ingredients delivered to your door (per their website). Three plan types are available, Classic, Vegetarian and Family. You choose from feeding 2-4 people depending on the plan and between 2-4 recipes per week, again, depending on the plan. A Classic plan selecting 3 meals a week is $59.94.

Things I liked about Hello Fresh:

*Free Delivery - Tracking number
*Great email communication on when items were being delivered
*Everything was recyclable
*Items were still very cold
*Nothing leaked
*Produce was in good shape
*Choose your meals from about 12 or more different options under each plan
*Items labeled and all meal fixings are in a bag for that meal
*Easy to follow instructions with pictures
*Most meals take under 30 minutes from beginning to end
*Portion sizes seemed pretty close to what we eat - we did add a salad to most meals
*Skip a week easily
*Easy to cancel/sign back up
*meals were filing
*Portion sizes seemed pretty close to what we eat, but we did add a salad to most meals

Things I can do without:

*A little pricey at $9.95 per meal (so $19.98 for two) after the initial discount you get on the first box - still one of the least expensive box delivery services though
*Steak and specialty meals are an extra $5 a serving/person

Additional Thoughts hard to explain with just a sentence:

While the idea of a delivery program is enticing, $60 a week for 3 meals for 2 people is hard to wrap my head around. I'm a saver so at this price it is almost double what I can buy the ingredients at the store and make it for my entire family.

However, during soccer season this year I am looking at three days during the week (Tuesday through Thursday) and Sunday where meal time is either grab and go or happens late at night. I don't want to have to think during that time when we get home and I am wondering what to pick or if I have all the ingredients to make what I had planned (sometimes my brain thinks I have something in the pantry and forgets I used it a week ago in another dish).

You don't have to shop for three meals which leaves four you do (we have taco/nacho night once a week so that leaves me with three meals). For a family of four, I spend around $150 every two to three weeks on groceries. I shop Aldi's, Fresh Thyme and sales if someone else is having an amazing deal that we use regularly. So $60 would cover my husband's and my meals, but then I still have the kids to feed and three meals to buy for. While this could be done still within that $150, $90 is not a lot to play with once school snacks/regular home snacks are factored in.

Will we continue Hello Fresh?

Not sure yet. Generally the answer would be no, but like I said, soccer season puts some added craziness that happens around here with practices happening during dinner time. At this time, I have suspended the service for the next two weeks to see where we are at (that puts us in the middle of soccer season so still plenty of time to get back on the train). I will keep you up to date.

Full color, step by step instructions

Every meal prep (non meat items) were in bags marked for that meal.
No trying to figure out what goes with what meal.

Meat was packed on the bottom with ice packs underneath and on top

Our favorite meal (we liked them all though). Pasta with baby broccoli, crumbled sausage with a pesto sauce and Parmesan cheese. YUM!!
