How did I miss this? Bathroom Remodel

Wow! How did I miss posting about our latest remodel?  Our 'big' project of the year was ripping out our bathroom and starting from scratch.  It wasn't intentionally a 'start from scratch' project. We planned on reusing the vanity and just staining it a dark brown and just ripping off the tile and mudding/sanding the drywall and putting in a new floor.  It quickly turned into a 'lets rip this thing down to the studs and start over' project.  Good thing it was a fairly small room! A layer of drywall, some plaster and that fun lathe later, we could see studs and only studs.  It was confirmed though that we do not have ANY insulation in our house what-so-ever and after our fun project, this is now the ONLY room that does have insulation in it!

This is before we starting ripping down the walls. Never been a fan of the tile, but it wasn't something we had to change when we first moved in. It was functional, even if it wasn't pretty.

Jacob wanted to help too, so he got his 'tools' out and helped pound away at the plaster.

Time for new wiring.  I cannot express the need for new wiring in this house! Some of this wiring is just SCARY so it felt good to have the bathroom completely rewired.

The bathtub surround.  The guys had a fun time pulling this down. It was not the greatest feeling when all they had to do was pull once and the whole wall of tile and drywall came down in 3 big sheets and the plaster just disintegrated when you touched it.  It was a bit wet from cracked grout and improper materials.  Not only was there a layer of tile and drywall, there was then a thick layer of plaster, a layer of lathe, and then 3 layers of shims under the lathe? Who does that? No wonder our tub felt like you were confined to a cage and had to turn sideways to wash your hair (or at least I did).  After taking out the wall, we gained 2 inches of extra space even after the drywall and tile went up.

After demo, comes the rebuild.  Mildew/Mold resistant green board and cement board for the shower, PLUS insulation in the walls!!! It'll be the warmest room in the house :)

COLOR! We have color! I know it's quite bold (what room in my house isn't?), and Jason was kind of hesitant at first at my color choice, but after getting the entire room painted and letting it dry, I was very happy with how it turned out.

Jacob 'helping' with the shower tile spacers. He was promptly kicked out about 5 minutes later because he was 'helping' a little too much.  A new floor and a new shower surround - 8 years in waiting.

And then there was grout...

And a vanity and lights!

A new medicine cabinet and a new piece of furniture for storage (new toilet too).

A new Tiffany light for over the vanity and a new beautiful vanity to go with the old Craftsman style of the house.

Window is trimmed out and finished off with a draping panel.

What a DIFFERENCE!!! It goes so much better with the rest of the house now. You don't feel like you are in a time warp when you enter the bathroom :)

Many, many, many thanks to our friends Kelly and Mike.  Kelly is wonder woman and helped me demo and Mike helped Jason rebuild (really it was more Jason did what Mike said and Mike did the rebuild!!).  You can check out Kelly's blog here and see all the awesome ideas she has.
